Progressive Jackpots Explained

By Verdict Casino Editorial Team · Updated May 30, 2026

In short: A progressive jackpot is a prize pool that grows with every bet placed on a linked slot or game until one player wins it all. The pot resets to a seed amount and starts climbing again. Unlike fixed jackpots, the top prize has no ceiling. Winning is rare and entirely luck-based — no strategy increases your odds, and bonus funds are typically excluded from qualifying spins.

How progressive jackpots work

Every bet placed on a progressive slot feeds a central prize pool. A fixed percentage of each wager — the contribution rate — is siphoned off and added to the jackpot meter displayed on the game. The pool grows continuously until a qualifying player triggers the jackpot condition and takes the full amount.

After a win, the jackpot resets to its seed value (a guaranteed starting floor set by the provider) and begins accumulating again.

Types of progressive jackpot

TypeHow the pool is builtTypical prize range
StandaloneSingle machine onlyLow (thousands)
Local networkLinked across one casinoMedium (tens of thousands)
Wide-area networkLinked across many casinosHigh (millions)
Must-dropResets before a set ceilingVariable, guaranteed timing

Wide-area networked jackpots produce the largest prizes because millions of players contribute simultaneously. Must-drop variants trade size for predictability — the jackpot must fall before a stated threshold, so late-stage pools attract concentrated play.

The RTP trade-off

Progressive slots return a portion of every bet to the jackpot pool rather than to regular wins. This means the base game RTP is lower than an equivalent fixed-win slot. A progressive may show an overall RTP of 96%, but the jackpot contribution accounts for 2–3% of that. Your expected return from non-jackpot play is correspondingly smaller.

If you are playing to clear wagering requirements, progressives are a poor choice — most casinos exclude them entirely or apply a 0% contribution rate to bonus turnover.

Odds and house edge

No published formula exists for individual jackpot hit frequency — providers do not disclose this. What is known: the larger the network, the rarer the hit. The expected value of a jackpot spin is mathematically negative for the vast majority of players, the same as any casino game. Play for entertainment, not as an investment strategy.

Claiming a progressive win

Large jackpots at licensed casinos are subject to enhanced KYC verification before payout. Expect the casino to request identity documents, proof of address, and source-of-funds evidence for significant wins. This is a legal requirement under anti-money-laundering regulations, not an attempt to avoid paying.

Check that any operator you play at holds a valid licence before chasing a jackpot — our casinos page lists only regulated operators. For context on how bonuses interact with jackpot slots, see our guide on how to read casino bonus terms.

Frequently asked questions

How does a progressive jackpot grow?

A small percentage of every qualifying bet — typically 1–3% — is diverted into the jackpot pool. The more players bet, the faster it rises. Wide-area networks linking thousands of casinos can push totals into the tens of millions.

Do I need to bet maximum to win a progressive jackpot?

On many classic progressive slots, yes — the top jackpot is only triggered at maximum coin size. Modern video progressives often award the jackpot randomly regardless of bet size, but higher bets still increase your probability of triggering it.

Can I use bonus funds to spin a progressive jackpot?

Most casinos explicitly exclude progressive jackpot slots from bonus wagering and sometimes from play with bonus balance entirely. Always check the game restrictions in the bonus terms before spinning.

What happens to the jackpot if nobody wins for months?

It keeps accumulating until someone wins. There is no forced draw or expiry date. Must-drop jackpots are a different format — they guarantee a payout before a set threshold is reached.
